Preeceville’s history

Settlement around Preeceville goes back to the fur traders who came to the upper Assiniboine region after explorer David Thompson mapped the area in 1796. Ranchers later followed the trails left by those traders and by Indigenous peoples, and they became the area's earliest settlers.

The Preece family set up a homestead on the spot where the town now stands in 1905, and the community takes its name from them. In 1912 Preeceville was officially established as a village, the same year the Canadian National Railway arrived, which drew still more settlers to the region.

Preeceville is now a town, found where Highways 49, 47 and 9 meet, about 10 kilometres west of Sturgis and 99 kilometres north of Yorkton.
